Of all the questions I am ever asked by business owners with a website, I would have to say the most asked question is: how to get more traffic to their websites.
Before I mention a couple of ways to gain traffic, I want to talk about quality.
You see, getting traffic to your site is great and all. But, you have to make sure you spend your time getting quality web traffic. And I don't mean going out and paying for exit pop ups and the like. Those are a total waste of time.
If you are going to spend money, you will want to try pay per click advertising. However you will need to learn a little bit about it first. Because if you don't you can waste a lot of money and fast. So you need to make sure what you are doing. Check out the website by Perry Marshall, http://www.perrymashall.com
He has a great book that will teach you about AdWords. Make sure you pick up a copy or at least find something or someone to teach you about AdWords.
A way to get free traffic. If you have a small website with under 30 pages, you may or may not have some good local search engine keyword listings. That's great. However, I can bet with so few pages you are not getting a lot of traffic to your website like you had hoped.
One of the ways you can get traffic is by gain links to your website from other local relevant business's. Not your direct competition, but business's that are like yours.
Your goal here would be to try and find some local websites by searching in Google with keywords. Let's say you are a plumber. You could find and trade links with heating and air or painting business's.
The way to look for these websites in Google is by typing in a command. You simply type in the Google search box.
Keyword +add url
ie, painters Cleveland +add url
The add url function will search websites where they accept links. Try it it's pretty easy. Just search down the list and keep track of each website in an excel spreadsheet. Get about 30 or so of these sites and then go back and start submitting your url.
Sure, this may seem like alot of work but, if you play your cards right and find websites with some good quality traffic, they too will give you the traffic you are looking for.
At first try exchanging links with 30 and see what results you get. Add more if you don't get the results you are looking for.
Now one last word of caution here. If you count on search engine rankings, this may or may not be for you. The reason is because some search engines are cracking down on link exchanges. So you have to make sure you only exchange links with relevant websites.
Also you do not want to link with anyone who practices bad search engine marketing. That is linking to link farms. A link farm is a web page or website set up to do nothing but trade links that have nothing to do with each other.
Don't put all your eggs in one basket. The best strategy is to trade a few links that will give you some good local traffic and keep your search engine rankings. Never put all your marketing eggs into one basket with your local business website.
